Overview

Copilot Chat is an AI-based tool by Microsoft. It uses advanced AI to assist users by generating text, creating summaries, suggesting edits, and automating repetitive tasks. Copilot aims to improve productivity and efficiency by offering smart suggestions, helping users create and refine
documents, manage emails, and analyze data more effectively. This tool is designed to make everyday tasks easier and more streamlined for everyone, regardless of their technical expertise.


Who can use this product?

As of Fall 2025, ASU students, faculty, and staff can use Microsoft Copilot Chat at no cost.

ASU students, faculty, and staff can access this tool by visiting the Microsoft Copilot Chat page and logging in via SSO.

Use Copilot Chat

Quick steps to start using Copilot Chat

  1. Go to copilot.microsoft.com.
  2. Sign in with your ASU email address and ASURITE credentials. 

     

  3. Review Copilot’s welcome tour or help section for a feature overview.
  4. Type a prompt or question in the chat interface.
  5. Explore integrated features such as document summarization, drafting, and research assistance.
  6. Use the sidebar to access chat history, tools, and settings.
  7. For any course or student-related work, make sure you are logged in with your ASU account for data protection.

     

Example use case


A student wants to quickly summarize a research article.

Steps

  1. Upload the research article as a file or paste its text into the Copilot chat box.
  2. Type a prompt in Copilot Chat asking it to summarize the article:


    "Summarize this article for me."

  3. Review and export the summary.

More about Copilot

Copilot interactions comply with strict privacy standards when signed in to your ASURITE. Using FERPA and Internal ASU data in the Copilot is considered low-risk and generally regarded as safe based on the evaluated information security controls. Approval to use these data types with this application is at the discretion of your business unit's Accountable Administrator. Copilot will not use any data, prompts, or responses for any AI training.

  • Intelligent Writing Assistance: Copilot provides real-time suggestions for grammar, style, and content improvement, helping users create high-quality documents efficiently.

     

  • Image Creation: Image creation is built into Copilot to allow for more engaging content.

  • Occasional Inaccuracies: May occasionally produce incorrect or irrelevant responses.
  • Internet Requirement: Needs internet access to function optimally.
  • Lack of Reasoning and Context Awareness: AI tools currently struggle with complex reasoning and executing detailed plans, as they can misinterpret context and lack the ability to understand long-term dependencies.

  • Content Creation: Copilot can assist faculty in drafting course materials, lesson plans, presentations, research papers, and lecture notes.
  • Writing Assistance: Essay reviews, suggesting improvements in grammar, structure, and clarity, and providing feedback for better writing quality. Creatively updating the tone, style, and voice of essays.
  • Summarization: Summarizing academic articles, research papers, and book chapters.
  • Translation: Translating text between over 25 languages.
  • Drafting emails.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze and visualize data.
