ChatGPT Edu

Overview

ChatGPT Edu is a chatbot and virtual assistant that can help with various tasks. Possible tasks include answering questions, drafting documents, summarizing text, creating images or automating processes. ChatGPT Edu is available to ASU due to an enterprise agreement between ASU and Open AI. The contract ensures that ASU data is stored safely and will not be used for training Open AI’s AI. ChatGPT Edu supports the most advanced Open AI model, Image Generation and GPTs (prebuilt AI tools for specific tasks).


Who can use this product?

ASU faculty, staff and student workers can use ChatGPT Edu. Access is paid for and set up through individual ASU units. Individuals cannot purchase licenses directly. Licenses require supervisor or business operations manager approval.

  1. How to request access:
    Faculty and staff can request a license via ServiceNow
  2. How to login:
    Once you have an account setup, follow the instructions in the welcome email. The instructions will point you to: https://chatgpt.com/ to login.
  3. How to use:
    Using natural language, ask ChatGPT Edu to do something. For instance: ‘Help me outline a paper on the psychological elements of resilience’

More about ChatGPT Edu

ChatGPT Edu interactions comply with strict privacy standards. The ChatGPT Edu application is approved for ASU non-regulated and internal data and is FERPA compliant. ChatGPT Edu will not use any data, prompts, or responses for any AI training. The retention period configured on ASU’s ChatGPT Edu workspace is 180 days. Please note that ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Team accounts are not approved for FERPA data, or any otherwise sensitive or non-public ASU data. 

 

  • Leading AI model: ChatGPT Edu has access to OpenAI's 4o model. 
  • Image creation: Powerful image creation is built into the tool. Image creation is via the DALL-E 3 model.
  • Privacy and data security: ChatGPT Edu is approved for ASU non-regulated and internal data and is FERPA compliant.  Additionally, no ASU data or prompts will be used to train AI models.
  • Higher messaging limits: ChatGPT Edu has a higher messaging capacity than the free version for ChatGPT. ChatGPT Edu has the same higher messaging capacity as 'Plus' noted here.
  • Single Sign-On (SSO): ChatGPT Edu supports ASURITE authentication.
  • Data analysis: ChatGPT Edu can perform data analysis and provide summaries and interpretations from provided dataset
  • Web browsing: ChatGPT Edu can retrieve information from website URLs as needed

 

  • Occasional inaccuracies: May occasionally produce incorrect or irrelevant responses.
  • Internet requirement: Needs internet access to function optimally.
  • Lack of reasoning and context awareness: AI tools currently struggle with complex reasoning and executing detailed plans, as they can misinterpret context and lack the ability to understand long-term dependencies.
  • High cost: ChatGPT Edu is somewhat expensive and free options also exist such as ChatGPT free or the free version of Microsoft Copilot.
  • Environmental impact: ChatGPT Edu has an impact on energy and water use due to the large data centers required to host its powerful AI model.

 

  • Content creation: Assisting faculty in drafting course materials, lesson plans, presentations, research papers, and lecture notes.
  • Syllabus creation (Follow ASU policy/outlines)
  • Writing assistance: Essay reviews, suggesting improvements in grammar, structure, and clarity, and providing feedback for better writing quality. Creatively updating the tone, style, and voice of essays.
  • Summarization: Summarizing academic articles, research papers, and book chapters.
  • Translation: Translating text between languages.
  • Technical tasks: Writing programming code, helping configure infrastructure, and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Interactive learning: Conversational learning and tutoring.
  • GPT access: GPTs are custom versions of ChatGPT that users can personalize for specific tasks or topics by adding instructions, information, and features.

ChatGPT (Free)

ChatGPT Free is available without cost.  It offers access to the same leading Open AI model as ChatGPT Edu but has some restrictions:  

  • Lower messaging limits
  • Data is not isolated,  so ASU data should not be used in ChatGPT Free
  • Data from ChatGPT Free is used for AI training 
  • Image generation is not available
  • GPTs (custom built AI helpers) are not available
