Student upgraded access*

A student at ASU who requires upgraded access to ChatGPT Edu for academic or research purposes, such as working with larger datasets or documents. Access requires faculty/professor endorsement via ServiceNow before being granted.

Employee upgraded access*
A faculty or staff member at ASU who requires upgraded access to ChatGPT Edu for research or work purposes. Access is granted upon request via ServiceNow with justification.

*Upgraded access was previously referred to as Researcher Access.

Yes, faculty will need to submit a request through ServiceNow. The following should be included in the request:

• Justification of usage — required. Each request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis; there are no predefined approval criteria.
• If access needs to be recurring (e.g. renewed each semester), that must be stated explicitly in the justification — it won't be automated or repeated unless noted.
• Course identifier — include the course code (or another identifier EDNA can use) so recurring access can be automated on the backend.

Some ChatGPT Edu features use credits. Think of credits like fuel, not message counts: features that don’t require credits won’t reduce your balance, while advanced models and features use credits as you use them.

There isn’t a fixed credit cost per prompt. The amount of credits used depends on the model, feature, and amount of work required to complete your request. This means two requests can use very different amounts of credits. For example, using a higher thinking level, Deep Research, or Codex may consume credits faster.

Your monthly credit allocation depends on your account type:

• Students: No credit allocation; cannot access credit-consuming features
• Student Upgraded Access: 8,000 credits/month; access to some credit-consuming features (see chart)
• Employee: 8,000 credits/month
• Employee Upgraded Access: 12,000 credits/month*

*Exceptions exist for Faculty/Staff accounts to receive 20,000 credits/month

Because credit consumption rates can change, refer to the current ChatGPT Rate Card (Business/Enterprise/Edu) and Codex Rate Card for the latest rates.

To see your remaining credits and usage, click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner, select Settings, then open Usage.

If you're selecting Continue with Google on chatgpt.com, you may be directed to a personal ChatGPT account instead of ASU's ChatGPT Edu workspace. Instead, sign in using your [email protected] email address or access ChatGPT Edu through the ASU login page. If signing in with your ASU email still doesn't work, verify that you are subscribed by checking the Self-Subscription Portal.

If your personal ChatGPT account uses your [email protected] email address, you'll have the option to merge it with your ASU ChatGPT Edu account. Keep in mind that merged accounts cannot be separated later, and your available models and features may change. If your personal account uses an ASU email alias (such as [email protected]), you may lose access to that account after joining ChatGPT Edu.

When your access to ASU’s ChatGPT Edu workspace ends, your existing conversations may still be available for a limited time. ChatGPT Edu data is automatically deleted after 90 days of account inactivity. Once that 90-day window has passed, your conversations can no longer be recovered.

If you need to retrieve a past conversation during that 90-day window, you can request temporary access to your ChatGPT Edu account by contacting the ASU Experience Center at 480-965-6500 or 1-855-278-5080. Temporary access allows you to return to your account and reference conversations that are still available.

Please note that exporting or downloading your chat history is not available in the ASU’s ChatGPT Edu workspace. This restriction is to prevent data leakage, protect intellectual property, and support regulatory compliance for institutional information. 

Yes. ChatGPT Edu users can browse and use GPTs from the GPT Store, including GPTs created by OpenAI and other ASU users. Publishing and collaboration are limited to the ASU workspace and are not available outside the organization.

Yes. ChatGPT Edu can translate text between many languages and is effective for general translation tasks. For academic, research, legal, or official communications, translations should always be reviewed by a qualified human before use.
