Sentinel is part of the The Veteran and Military Advocacy Training (VMAT), a course designed to help ASU faculty and staff better understand and support military-affiliated students. The course explores military culture, student experiences, and practical strategies to foster inclusive, responsive learning environments. Participants gain access to key campus and national resources and earn a Veteran & Military Champion badge upon completion. It’s about more than awareness—it’s about making every student feel they belong.

Sentinel is designed with the C.A.R.E model:

• Connect with empathy by acknowledging what the student is experiencing.
• Ask questions without judgment to help clarify their needs.
• Respond with resources. Several organizations on campus support different types of needs. It’s okay if the first resource isn’t “perfect.”
• Extend an invitation to follow up to show you are engaged with their well-being.
